Healthbeat: Dr. Douglas Gwatidzo and Mariam Kokher
March 3, 2009
There are concerns that malaria cases are likely to increase because of untended long grass and the many stagnant pools that can now be found everywhere. Dr Douglas Gwatidzo talks about this possibility, and he explains what symptoms people should look out for in order to get treatment for malaria before it develops into the more serious cerebral malaria. Although of course with the collapse of the health care system treatment is difficult to get. Human trafficking is something that many people are not aware of, and many don’t know that it is taking place in the Southern African region. Mariam Kokher is Program Manager for the Southern African Counter-Trafficking Program at the International Organisation for Migration and she talks about why they believe human trafficking in South Africa is expected to increase, as traffickers exploit the demand in the lead-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
